This industry comprises a wide range of companies and organizations involved in designing, developing, manufacturing, marketing, and selling motor vehicles. Automobile manufacturing has emerged as one of the high-growth sectors in India. The ‘Make in India’ program places India on the world map as an automobile manufacturing hub and gives global recognition to the Indian economy.

Corrosion issues in Automotive Industry

Automobile manufacturers are into manufacturing various parts like engine components, body, fuel tank, chassis, etc. and assemble them to make complete vehicles. From the manufacturing of these parts to assembly, it takes time. But it is not necessary, the manufacturing of parts and assembly locations are same, sometimes it is a cross border or crosses sea.

Since this is a long manufacturing and supply chain process, there is always a risk of corrosion on parts during manufacturing, shipping, and storage. Corrosion on parts may lead to failure of vehicle performance. Corrosion can happen at any stage and on any part of the vehicle, either on the machine part or body, resulting in accidents and casualties. Corrosion prevention in Automotive fuel tanks.

One of the leading 2-wheeler manufacturers was facing corrosion issues inside the fuel tank, so they approached Zavenir Daubert for the solution. Despite a lot of research done in the use of steel in the manufacture of fuel tanks to prevent corrosion, an external temporary corrosion inhibitor is preferred to avoid corrosion during the interim period between manufacture and sale of the vehicles when the fuel tank is generally empty. At that time due to the thermal cycle and condensation, there is a chance of corrosion inside the fuel tank.

In this case, the fuel tanks were made up of Galvanised Steel and concern was rusting inside the fuel tank from the period of storage to shipping to distributors or exports. The requirement was for 9-month corrosion protection inside the fuel tank, and it was a complex task. Moreover, it was not possible to apply rust preventive oil, as in the future when petrol would be filled in the fuel tank; the rust preventive oil may contaminate the petrol which may lead to choking of fuel pipeline. Therefore, Zavenir Daubert proposed highly effective VCI liquid NOX-RUST VCI 105 S, compatible with most petroleum fuels and lubricating oils. NOX-RUST VCI 105 S is a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitive to preserve ferrous metal parts in enclosed systems. NOX-RUST VCI 105 S combines the protective properties of a preservative oil with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors. It is based on the proprietary Daubert VCI Technology, is extremely effective in enclosed areas, and provides excellent Vapour Phase Protection to the applied system.

At first, a compatibility test of NOX-RUST VCI 105 S was conducted, and it was found compatible. Then, added an additional step to clean the fuel tank with an aqueous cleaner for enhanced cleaning to ensure no contamination inside the fuel tank when NOX-RUST VCI 105 S is applied. Next, NOX-RUST VCI 105 S was applied by pouring the same into the fuel tank. Further validations were conducted using cyclical humidity chamber tests to simulate the sea condition. After the success of these lab tests and extensive field research, there was a great deal of success with near-zero corrosion of the tanks even after 9 months.

NOX-RUST VCI liquids are suitable for closed systems such as fuel tanks, storage tanks, cylinders, transmissions, gear housings, clutch compartments, crankcases, hydraulic and cooling circulating systems. It is also used for fogging into shipping cases to protect unpainted auto and truck body sections during shipments.
